"The Pink Wash, Chaffens"
'Often I have enjoyed the good fortune of unexpectedly find an interesting subject.
At Chaffens, a farm near Crest, the great outer door happened to be open as my admiral and I drove past - just a piece of luck as we knew the road well.
Only a matter of minutes later I was painting this big water-colour within the precincts.
Within an hour the, to me, essential figure motive offered itself, that of the two girls renewing the pink wash on the columns.'
